The state alleged that he drove his pickup truck off Eagle River Road and into the trees, killing three passengers, and seriously injuring a fourth. The incident occurred on July 20, 1983, at approximately 10:12 p.m. Stiegele was indicted on three counts of second-degree murder, AS 11.41.110(a)(1); three counts of second-degree murder involving the same three victims under AS 11.41.110(a)(2); and one count of second-degree assault under AS 11.41.210(a)(2).
